Workshop Series: Beyond Asana

I found yoga as a physical practice. At the start, the only thing that could penetrate my chaotic, churning mind was asana so intense it left no space for anxiety, worry, or distraction. And although asana hooked my attention, it’s the philosophy of yoga that changed me.

The Beyond Asana series will take you past the physical practice and into the philosophy of yoga through the Yamas (moral guidelines). Each 2-hour workshop includes group discussion, journaling and self-reflection, micro-practices, and guided meditation. Some workshops also include gentle asana. Every participant will receive a Beyond Asana workbook and build the content with each session they attend.

Cost: $20/each or $80 if you register for all 5 (workshops not sequential)
Date: Sundays 1/5, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2

Asteya: Setting and respecting boundaries (Jan. 19)

In this workshop, we will explore both sides of Asteya (non-stealing) – the ways we intentionally or unintentionally steal from others, and the ways others steal from us. Beneath the surface level of stealing physical items, we will discuss the way time, energy, intrinsic value, and worthiness can also be stolen. We will practice pranayama and meditation  to explore the way the physical part of our practice might steal from others. Brahmacharya: Managing your energy

In this workshop, we will begin to examine the ways we spend (or misspend) our energy through Brahmacharya. The group will then build a personal toolkit of ways to prevent energy misuse, and replenish our energy levels through regenerative practices found in asana, pranayama, and meditation.

Each participant will receive the Brahmacharya section of the workbook, including energy management micropractices to continue learning on your own.

Aparigraha: Letting go of things

In this workshop, we will begin to unearth our attachment to material goods, outcomes, beliefs, and even our deeper desires. We will reflect on the things we cling to and why, and open a deeper discussion of when we act from fear and when we act from equanimity.  We will learn to “tidy” our minds with the help of guest speaker Christie Vanek, certified Marie Kondo tidying consultant. The workshop concludes with a meditation on non-attachment and creating a personal commitment.

Each participant will receive the Asteya section of the workbook, including the personal commitment tracker to continue practicing on your own.
